Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

This is a basic and comfortable lodge with superb views of the Ngorongoro Crater. While not offering luxury accommodation, the hotel represents good value for its location when compared with other nearby enterprises.

Accommodation at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

The lodge boasts 80 rooms. All are of a comfortable size and are available as doubles (one double bed) twins, or triples. The rooms are tastefully furnished, but lack character.

As with many lodges in the area, hot water tends to be unreliable, and is only available mornings and after 5pm. Electricity is also sporadic and the hotel generator is often turned off late at night. Guests are advised to carry torches for after dark. Heating in the rooms is not always satisfactory. Guests may need to ask for extra blankets. This region gets chilly at night and early in the morning and it is advisable to pack nightwear.

Rooms feature mosquito nets (less necessary in the cooler Ngorongoro region), shaver sockets, hair dryers, mini-bar fridges, tea and coffee making facilities, safes and telephones.[/tab]

Food and Drink at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

The lodge offers buffet dinners, hot and cold breakfast options and packed lunch boxes for those wishing to eat on the go.

Food is unexceptional but not bad. When compared with many of the regions lodges dinner is more varied and tastier than some. The chef is keen to talk to guests as well, an interaction which would suggest a desire to improve. Puddings in this region tend to be bland or over sweetened. Packed lunches tend to be unsatisfying and un-fresh.

The hotel bar is well situated and offers a good variety of reasonably priced drinks. Guest can enjoy their drinks looking out over the crater; a good way to unwind after a day on safari.

Service at Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife Lodge

The service at the lodge is slightly on the impersonal side, but the staff are making an effort to be polite and courteous.  As the hotel is reasonably large and is not offering a luxury experience the level of attention guests receive can seem very underwhelming. Language difficulties and small training oversights add to the feeling that the service on offer could be more professional.

The hotel offers a gift shop, laundry and currency exchange. It has an internet access point (for an extra charge).

Things to do at Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife Lodge

The lodge has its own gardens, though these are not extensive, as well as a pleasant outdoor seating area. The lodge offers a satellite TV lounge.

The lodge is well located for game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater. The hotel can also help arrange ornithological safaris, walks along the edge of the crater towards Lake Eyasi visits to Maasai villages.

In the evenings, displays of traditional Maasai dance, song, and music performance are often organized in the Lodge, as well as wildlife talks, videos and film shows.
