Tarangire Safari Lodge

This lodge, located on a raised plateau, boasts excellent views over the Tarangire National Park.

Accommodation at Tarangire Safari Lodge

Rooms are either located in stone built bungalows or in tents. Only five bungalows are available and these tend to be booked up long in advance. Moreover, guests are advised that even those who have booked bungalows will occasionally arrive to discover they have been allocated tented accommodation instead.

While rooms in tents and bungalows are an acceptable size the camp is not as spaced out as some, and the layout can make the accommodation feel somewhat cramped.

The lodge offers a choice of 35 tents, most with two single beds, but four with doubles. All tents have their own private furnished verandas as well as en suite facilities. Showers are supplied with solar-heated water which can be unreliable.

Bungalows are a reasonable size and house one single and one double bed. They feature en suite facilities (again water is solar-heated and showers may be tepid) and a private thatched seating area.  [/tab]

Food and Drink at Tarangire Safari Lodge

Food is generally of reasonable quality, well prepared and fresh. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style and what is on offer, though bland in order to cater for package holiday tastes, is passable and quite filling. Dinners are not especially exciting and as the lodge commonly offers set menus, choice is limited. It is advisable to warn the lodge in advance of any dietary requirements.

The lodge’s restaurant is pleasant. Its open nature makes it feel very close to the wilderness. The lodge also has a small but comfortable lounge bar. This offers a variety of cocktails and local beers as well as a limited selection of wines.

What’s on offer at Tarangire Safari Lodge

The main attraction of the lodge is its proximity to a whole host of animal life; from elephants to cheetahs. However, the downside of this is that the camp can feel rather exposed. While during the day the ever-presence of a menagerie of beasts is magical in the evenings the trails between the tents and bungalows can be daunting. While guides are present to protect guests returning to their lodgings, security feels less ‘secure’ than at some lodges.

If you have any concerns it is vital to bring these up with the camp’s staff. A major incident occurred at this lodge some years ago, for which the lodge itself was found to be accountable. While Tarangire Safari Lodge have improved their safety measures hugely since then it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Staff are friendly and keen to help you get the most out of your time in Tarangire National Park. While service can seem less professional than that to which Westerners are accustomed, this has the benefit that it is also more relaxed lending the lodge convivial air.

The lodge offers a nice pool (a welcome but uncommon bonus on safari) as well as a gift shop for those wishing to buy souvenirs.
